| Inductee Bio Jimmy"The Genius" Phillips: As a young Air Force brat living in Hawaii, Jim Phillips took an early interest in the craft of shaping surfboards. While he was still in high school on Oahu in 1961 Jim began observing the work of George Downing, Joe Quigg and Dick Brewer, and learning from the crew at Inter-Island and Surfboards Hawaii, where Jim developed a following. His first big break came when Dick Metz offered him a spot in the shaping roster at Hobie Hawaii. | |||
